Larvae in my compost.. .ewww

I've been busy the past 3 days. So I have not stirred my compost. And I noticed today that it was beginning to smell. Despite the cover, and baking soda.

Pushed myself and found a few minutes, and yuck, there were these cream colored larvae crawling all over inside. Fruit flies I think... Stirred it. See how it goes tomorrow if I can find time.

  1. Ugh! I think there's too much wet waste in it, Cind. Have you tried putting the compost under direct sunlight so that most of it dessicates? I notice that most of my compost problems go away when I spread the compost out under the sun (in my yard) to dry. If not, try adding old newspaper strips to absorb the extra moisture. Good compost shouldn't smell sharp, vinegary or alcoholic. It should just smell like wet leaf litter and rotting leaves. You've given me an idea. I might do some research and do a GL column on this topic.
Hope the Munchkin is feeling better!
    Cheerio,
    Ee Lynn.

  2. Hi Chin. I read about your eco efforts in The Star on 2 June 2009. I hope your eco efforts will inspire other Malaysians to do the same. I'm glad to find another green blogger in the net. Hopefully we can be friends and share ideas/reviews in saving the environment. Do drop by my blog at http://hijaueveryday.blogspot.com. But 'malulah' ler. I haven't update my blog for quite a while :-(

Till then, happy world environmental day

  3. Hi Ee Lynn! :) Yes too much wet waste! Me very stingy with space initially... Now, I've been shredding newspaper into my compost recently everytime I stir. And it seems to be improving. It certainly seems to be doing well for the new batch :) Can't spread anywhere... No spacelah... Me in an apartment remember ;) Thanks for the advise! Cerys is doing better. Nasty cough and a snotty nose but oklah. They're at FRIM now. I managed to convince her to go without me.

Hi Didie! Thanks for coming to my blog! I can't say that I will inspire other Malaysians. But I do hope I can share some information along the way. I@ve actually been at your blog before this :). I especially enjoyed reading about your beach clean up with your son. I was just there in Ma Daerah just last month.
